As an FYI, there is a considerable amount of experimentation and work being done as part of the next generation CDB activity. This research and experimentation is looking at formats/encodings, compression, fidelity, LoDs, data types ranging from terrain to 3d models for vehicles, meshes, and the use of existing OGC standards (I3S, 3D Tiles, GPKG Related Tables, GPKG Tiled Gridded Coverages) and more. So, many lessons being learned and requirements to be stated. All of this could feed into any potential API work.
