redesign interface #67

this is a long-term, low-priority task that involves researching the screens system in renpy and making changes to the provided defaults.

aesthetically, the interface should remain pretty simple, especially for the conversation box. it needs to not call attention to itself, because its main job is to highlight the art and writing created by the game's contributors. i like the black transparent style that it has by default, but it could afford to be much less visible on the right side of the screen, to account for how many characters have faces low to the ground (since that is how object characters tend to be). also, we should consider moving the text more to the left, if that's the direction we go with.

Here's a concept of what the dialogue box could look like.

It was pointed out to me that the animation would start to become annoying after some time, so maybe something a little more slight might do the job.

i also think it'd be most optimal if there was no illustration produced for the dialogue section whatsoever- minimalism would be the best way to go so that this can avoid being a focus point, making way for the other, very stylistically varied art throughout the game.

I'd like to hear what other people think about this

Maybe there could be a setting to vary the animation speed so that it doesn't get annoying fluctuating all the time.

pixequil commented 1 year ago

that solves the annoyance issue, but, if it defaults to animating, that still doesn't solve the issue of it drawing attention away from the art

What if we could have each character have unique dialogue box art? Paired with the character, I think it would contrast quite nicely.
