RE2 keeps crashing on start up when REFramework window appears #122

Open Evasucksomuch opened 2 years ago

Evasucksomuch commented 2 years ago

Hello everyone,

This is my first time posting anything here on Here & this is my first prebuilt gaming PC I've ever owned. I've always used Macs. so please don't be too hard on me if my question seems stupid or the answer seems super obvious.

System Specs: I'm running a 11th Gen intel Cor i9-11900KF@ 3.50GHz with 64GB Ram. And a RTX 3080ti

Problem: I purchased RE2 & RE3 on Steam last week and just say that everyone on youtube is talking about how amazing and how easy it is to install and play. So this got me excited because my sister and I just got an Oculus Quest 2 for Christmas and thought this would be a great game for us to play!

I downloaded the Mod and extract it into the RE folder were the RE.exe file is located just like the instructions said but when i go to start the game from my steam library, the game starts like usual but as soon as the REFramework window appears on the top left corner, the game 'chugs' for a split second and then crashes...

Trouble shooting attemps:

Attempt #1: I deleted the VR mod from RE folder and un-installed RE2 from Steam library. Then i re-installed the game and re-installed the VR mod into the folder. When I press the "Play" button the game seems to want to start because I see it loading like normal BUT as soon as the REFramework box pops up on the top left corner, the game just shuts off... I even tried launching the game from inside my Oculus Quest 2 from the steam page and the same thing happens.

Attempt #2: i deleted the mods and started the game again, went into settings and i turned everything to LOW /off and exited the game. reinstalled the mods, connected the OC2, started SteamVR and went to start the game again. This time i got a message that says "RE2 does not support VR. It will appear on your desktop and may affect VR performance" i press okay and the game launched, but again, as soon as the REFramework box appears the game crashes.

Attempt #3: I went into the oculus desktop app and went to library, then added the game to my OQ library and attempted to launch it from there BUT it only saying "loading" and nothing seems to load. Sometimes when the game does launch withing my Oculus Quest 2, BUT again, as soon as the REFramework box appears, the game chugs for a split second and the game crashes.

I spent about 7hrs yesterday trying to trouble shoot this and had no luck. Can the community here please try to help me out? I'd really appericate any thoughts on what could be the problem.

mbell151 commented 2 years ago

You need to enable air link with your PC and accept on both sides. Make sure you are in Steam VR environment inside the Quest 2. Make sure that you have steam vr installed and running within steam or it will simply crash.

Evasucksomuch commented 2 years ago

I have been using the cable link and both the pc and headset are in sync. I also have steam vr installed and opened when I try to launch the game.

now when you say make sure you are inside steamer environment inside the quest 2, do you mean inside the “home” space of steamvr? Because my steam vr games pop up in my home space but RE2 is not listed there.

I even went as far as trying to launch RE 2 via virtual desktop app and I still get the same problem..

mbell151 commented 2 years ago

Are you using the usb c to usb c or usb c to usb?

I plug in my quest 2, accept the air link, start steam vr, start the game.

Evasucksomuch commented 2 years ago

I tried connecting usbc to usbc, then usbc to usb and I tried it wirelessly through airlike AND even tried launching the game without the quest 2 connected to my computer. I always get the same crash…

mbell151 commented 2 years ago

I would try to delete the mods and re-add them. Also, make sure your antivirus isn't removing openvr_api

May be a stupid question, but what GPU do you have?

Evasucksomuch commented 2 years ago

I should have included that information in my post. I apologize.. I’m running an RTX 3080 ti

mbell151 commented 2 years ago

No issue there, then. Mine would do the same thing yours is doing until I had steam vr running through steam.

Evasucksomuch commented 2 years ago

I really hope that Praydog comes across this post and possibly give his input…

any thoughts on what the message “RE2 does not support vr. It will appear on your desktop but wil effect performance”?

mbell151 commented 2 years ago

I get the same message. I click "okay" and the game launches.

Evasucksomuch commented 2 years ago

My game launches as well but as soon as the REFramework window appears the game crashes..

I should not that I’m using an lg oled c1 65inch tv as a monitor with HDR turned off. And the game set to windowed. Not full screen or anything.

mbell151 commented 2 years ago

Try unplugging the tv from PC as soon as you start the game

Evasucksomuch commented 2 years ago

I’ll be home in about 45mins and I’ll try that and get back to you! (Thanks for not giving up on me and my situation btw. I appreciate your effort)

Evasucksomuch commented 2 years ago

Try unplugging the tv from PC as soon as you start the game

I just tried this method and I’m still having the crash happen as soon as the REFramework window pops up………… I’m losing my mind now. As much as I’d like to experience the wonder work Praydog has done with this vr mod I NEED to figure out what is causing this issue so I can at least walk away from this experience learning something.

mbell151 commented 2 years ago

I think there is some sort of developer mode on Quest 2 you may want to try. Do you have one of the other RE games you can try? (3, 7, 8)

mbell151 commented 2 years ago

I'm going to try it on my main desktop tomorrow with my Index. Worked fine on my laptop with quest 2. Will let you know if I can figure anything out.

Evasucksomuch commented 2 years ago

I have RE 3 but I haven’t tried the VR mod on it yet. I will now.

And yeah, I have developer move on on my quest 2

I just tried the mod on RE3 and the game still crashes when the REFramework pops up..

Joydurn commented 2 years ago

i believe i had a similar issue with the crashes, i reinstalled re2 and it worked, the reason being my re2.exe was from a previous version of the game. If u don't get the nvidia logos at the intro when the game is opening, it means you are on a older version of the game. However even after that fix i can't get the VR mode to work. I use quest 2 and virtual desktop streaming from my pc, and when I launch the game, it switches to this squished black screen with RE2 title, and i cant see the mod UI and cant change it

Can you try switching to DX11?

You can find a config file called re2_config.ini in your game folder if you're using RE2, name is similar for other games.

Change these lines:

TargetPlatform=DirectX12
PCDXver=DirectX12

To:

TargetPlatform=DirectX11
PCDXver=DirectX11

And then save the file.

Strange. All I can really recommend right now is to try updating your GPU drivers.

In the meantime, I'll work on some changes to D3D12.

Evasucksomuch commented 2 years ago

Hello good morning. Sorry for the delay I’m literally just waking up and seeing these messages. Please give me a little bit to wake up and I’ll upload my re2 framework log.

(Will deleting the mod from the RE2 folder effect the Re2_framewoek_log file? Because in order to do all my different type of troubleshoots, I had to delete and reinstall the mods into the game folder. (Sorry, I’m still new to this whole owning a windows pc thing)

also, I’ve tried changing those suggested lines from directx12 to 11 and it didn’t really do anything on my end. I still got the crashes.

Also one last thing to note, I never got that error message box that hallowseve78 got.

Hello, I just uninstalled SteamVR from my steam library and reinstalled it.

So I went back and uninstalled SteamVR and deleted your mod from RE2.

Also, i'm not sure if this information is helpful to you at all or not but this is my settings inside the file "re2_config.ini"

One thing I wanna point out that I've noticed is that the game always crashes when I have 'openvr_api.dll' inserted into the files because the game runs for me with 'dinput8.dll'.

StoofManley commented 2 years ago

I'm having the same exact issue. Here is my log file. I hope it helps. re2_framework_log.txt .

I can confirm that the game now runs for me when i dont install "openvr_api.dll" via steam with steamVR running in the background. I've only been able to test this with mouse and keyboard and no Quest 2 connected. (i have a phone meeting in a few minutes but as soon as it is over i'll test it with the quest and quest controllers)

Goood job Hallowseve78 for (potentially) solving this problem :) you're amazing!

Hallowseve78 said this if you havent seen his post "One thing I wanna point out that I've noticed is that the game always crashes when I have 'openvr_api.dll' inserted into the files because the game runs for me with 'dinput8.dll'."

try that. I haven't tried it with the Quest 2 yet but i know it'll run on your desktop at least.

image I don't think what I discovered fixed anything but it pin points the problem a little bit because it seems you need that file in order to get into VR however when you insert the file the game suddenly crashes. This is just so weird

I've tried removing openvr_api.dll from the game folder and it still crashes the same.

Coredawg commented 2 years ago

I've tried removing openvr_api.dll from the game folder and it still crashes the same.

Had the same issue. This is what fixed it for me. Delete the VR files you added, go into RE2, settings, graphics and make sure DX12 is enabled not DX11. Save. Exit RE2. Re-add VR files. Restart Steam VR and make sure its connected before you launch RE2.

I have the exact same issue and went through all the same solution attempts. So I don't have anything that could provide further insight into the issue, but just wanted to share that it's affecting one more person.

Well everyone, at least we know that Praydog is aware of this post. I’m sure a solution will present itself soon. :)

re2_framework_log.txt

Good morning,

I just tried that link and still had the same crash. I tried to attach the two requested files but i was only allowed to attach "re_Framework-log.txt"... when i tried to attach the "reframwork_crash.dmp" i get an error message saying this website doesnt support .dmp files.

praydog commented 2 years ago

That's unfortunate. Please try to upload the .dmp file somewhere else, like Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, it doesn't really matter.

I've tried running with the newest build and am still getting the crash. There is no DMP file being generated (I'm assuming it writes to the game directory). Here is my latest log file re2_framework_log.txt .

Sorry don't have a chance to upload my log files at the moment, I'm also having the same crashing issues. Quest 2 - Rtx 3070 - Air link - Monitor using a LG C1, but I use a headless ghost connected to my GPU, that I use exclusively for VR, setup with HDR off. Essentially the computer see's it as multi monitors, so maybe that's an issue? Glad it's being looked into Cheers

Have try this ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdquudGgPDc

FunkyPhilVR commented 2 years ago

So, I believe this has to do with HDR being on as a default in RE2 and VR can't use it. I was having the same issue and after some digging I figured it out. The main thing to do is launch the game before adding the mod to change some settings. I matched my settings to the guide in the YouTube video below. Proper setup/in game settings are at 18:37 onward in said video. Once I set those settings to match the video I closed the game and dragged the mod folder in. I relaunched the game in VR using Virtual Desktop and then I hit "okay" to pass the steam vr warning message. Switched to Steam VR in my headset. Now when you reach the start menu point your right controller to the left hand to bring up a VR settings menu and click the right trigger to bring up the cursor. It's a little tricky to get the cursor to appear but I got it after a few tries. On that pop up menu click "First Person" then check the box that says "Enabled". Move your right hand away and start the game by pressing A and you're set.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1sMOWTE9Gpo

Seanbirch commented 2 years ago

I went through all the steps. HDR isn't available by default because my monitor doesn't support it. Made the same settings as in the video. But when I started the game again, exact same thing. Quits during the startup logos.

I'd be happy to hear if anyone else got it working with this latest solution.

Old posted in Nvidia, Someone feedback v460.xx driver have Fatal Application Exit like that, Maybe try downgrade to 457.xx ,Especially DX11.

btw, I'm using 457.67 gtx1070
