Convert README to Markdown, use syntax highlighting #4

Hi,

I took the liberty to improve the README a little by converting it to Markdown. As a result, Github renders it (IMO) much nicer.

thanks, but no thanks. i prefer the RDoc style (and am waiting for the day you can tell GitHub the default format to use for files without a format extension).
