a good app to use to look for WORKING and FREE "wifi tether router" software
for the Galaxy Nexus on Sprint with Jellybean 4.2.1 might be APTOIDE... Just
saying. Probably a good place to look. Keep it OPEN SOURCE baby! Thank you to
ALL of you who worked hard to find a solution so that we all, to quote the
movie, Hackers, "never again have to pay for a service that would be dirt
cheap... IF it weren't run by a bunch of profiteering gluttons! Remember,
hacking is more than just a crime. It's a survival trait!" Ciao!

If you guys are willing to trust me, I have my own build of wifi-tether posted
at the link above; it is signed using my debug key, so you will need to
uninstall any existing version of wifi tether you may have.
FYI, my patch is not a general-purpose solution, as it will break on prior
versions of android (it is specifically tailored to 4.2); although it also
fixes the mssclamping error at the same time.

Hi Pfn*,
Great job there! I tried both the patch and the .apk (to download from gnex,
just don't use the final part of the link and it will allow you to click and
save it from the screen) and both work fine.
There was one nit that may be my fault, which was that DNS came out on some
other subnet (a private one, like 192.x.x.x) by mistake, but I just completely
wiped out any prior connects and it works now. I plugged in 8.8.8.8 manually
and it is still the best wifi tether by a long shot.
Thanks very much-

The apk simply incorporates my patch.
Original comment by pfngu...@gmail.com
on 27 Mar 2013 at 7:52
Yes, I understood that. I've had a few glitchy DHCP run-ins where the DNS isn't
returned from wifi-tether, so I'm wondering if you've seen that as well. It
could well be my client devices.
For example, if you tell whatever client you use to 'forget the connection'
(wipe it out one way or another), and then tell it to go grab it when it
notices the 'router' next, then does it return the proper DNS along with the
DHCP request?
Thanks much. A terrific job for us 4.2.2'rs.

I can confirm the apk on #109 does work on a T-Mobile GNex 4 4.2.2 with the
CM 10.1 rom. You need to use the Samsung Galaxy Nexus GSM profile, with the
netd-ndc setup method. I also have WPA2 enabled.
Now if I can just get past the pesky tmobile hotspot sites. Guess I'm stuck
using a VPN.

pfngu's patch fixed the problem and my laptop has no problem connecting.
Unfortunately the main reason I use tether (my Vita) does not work. I can see
the network, I can connect to it, but I can't connect out to anything (PS Store
or anything in the browser). =[
Original comment by lang...@gmail.com
on 28 Mar 2013 at 2:18
I can verify that pfngu's patched app worked out the problems for me on a
galaxy nexus running 4.2.1.
I wanted to use the WiFi Tether program because the stock, normal tether
operates on an unchangeable frequency (channel 6) that many MacBook pros have a
problem connecting with (this is a famous, long-standing problem).
My problems were the same as above - the tether (as run by the app) would
connect but it any attempt to go anywhere on the internet would time out. Using
Wifi Tether app would also "break" the normal tether functionality (the one
found in network prefs of course) until I restarted the phone - that bug alone
was quite interesting.
Now all seems to be fine for now. Great work pfngu and thanks for sharing the
app! I am now tethering on Channel 1.
Now lets see if this patch continues to work into future system versions!

Apk in 109 no go
Not working on Sprint 4.2.2. Starts with no errors, but neither of my
tables nor my PC can see network. Native tethering works, but I like
additional options available in WiFi tether.

No go for me on my GNex Sprint rooted stock 4.2.2. If I play with the options,
I can get it to fail with errors (see attached) but otherwise it starts without
error, but doesn't broadcast an SSID and I can't connect to it at all.

Make sure you uninstall the previous version of wifi tether before installing
this one. Also, turn off the 'native tethering' option in the settings of the

Weird for me - I tried the modified apk as well. I can now get wifi tether to
start up without errors in the log file, and I can connect to the tether ssid
with an older windows xp laptop it works great. I can navigate the internet
fine and speedtest.net tests show great performance. I also tried a newer
Windows7 laptop and it works equally as well. BUT, if I connect to the very
same ssid that is working great on the laptops with my desktop Windows7 machine
(the same desktop machine I've used up till last week before my 4.2.2 phone
upgrade which hosed everything) I get SSSSLLLLOOOOOOWWWWWWW communication and
most web page requests will just time out and throw an error. Now, I can switch
right back over to my home internet wireless router ssid and the desktop
machine flies and works as it should, but switch to the tether ssid and its
back to the incredibly slow communication. Meanwhile laptops can still operate
fine and fast. I tried everything incliding removing the dang wireless adapater
on the desktop and reinstalling it to try and correct the damn desktop
machine,, no dice,, just continues to act the same way. I wonder what is so
weird about this tether connection that the desktop doesn’t like but the
laptops are fine with??? its driving me nuts. lol

ok update to #127 - I just tried a USB wifi adapater in the troublesome desktop
machine, and it works with wifi tether just fine that way. nice and fast. So my
issue is obviously something with my desktop's internal wifi card, although I
have no idea what it is. Oh well, I'm calling the patched tether apk as
"working good". Thanks a ton pfngu! much appreciated!

Response to #131 - mine is a Samsung Galaxy Nexus running 4.2.2 - Device
Profile: Samsung Gnex cdma/lte, Setup Method: auto, Channel: 6, Driver Reload:
checked, Enable access control: checked, Routing fix: unchecked. I think
everything else is set at whatever their default values were.

for anyone who's got the Sprint model (toroplus) and is having issues - the
following settings worked for me:
Device profile: Samsung Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE)
WiFi-driver reload: checked
even though the gnex CDMA/LTE device profile option is for toro, yet the Sprint
model is toroplus, tethering seems to work after enabling the driver reload
option.

I installed this apk on my Samsung Epic 4G Touch running 4.2.1 and I can get it
working as long as encryption is off. If i turn encryption on I am not able to
connect. I triple checked my key values to make sure that I should be able to
connect!
I had to play with the settings a little tho. Unlike what others have said, my
settings were as follows:
Device profile: Samsung Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE)
Setup method: auto
WiFi-driver reload: NOT checked
I'll get online tonight and build my own apk with your differences to see if it
works, then try to track down why encryption is failing. I'll probably stick
with this for now, as my device vibrates when people connect i can go into the
access control and hopefully give them the boot!

I have a rooted Verizon GNex running 4.2.2 AOKP MR1 Build 6, and I can't get
anything to work for me, even with the updated apk. (I can't even get the
built-in tethering to work.) Periodically, with some settings (I can't remember
which), I can see the network and connect with my computer, but any page I try
to load just times out. I'm trying to connect with a MacBook Pro 2,1 running
10.6.8. I feel that I've tried every conceivable combination of setup mode,
encryption on/off, driver reload on/off, routing fix on/off, etc. I appreciate
the work by poster of #109, but it seems to me it still doesn't address all the
issues. If I'm missing something, please fill me in. Thanks, everybody!
