[SURE-6518] GKE Operator - Autopilot support #136

Open richardcase opened 1 year ago

SURE-6518

Summary

As a User, I want to provision Cluster with GKE Autopilot so that I can use the full google managed offerings for Kubernetes.

Goal

We need to support the autopilot mode for GKE so that customers can use 'autopilot' instead of 'standard'. Find more about the modes.

Background

Currently, we don't support GKE autopilot mode clusters. We have customers with significant usage that are specifically asking us to support autopilot for GKE. If we don't support GKE autopilot we risk to push them towards different solutions for cluster lifecycle management.

See: https://github.com/rancher/gke-operator/issues/135

This will need to be fixed with the install of the cluster agent as part of this: https://github.com/rancher/rancher/issues/39052

@rancher/ui Please add to Rancher UI for GKE create new option Autopilot. It should be added Cluster Options after enabling it. Adding Node pools should be switched off. Please let me know if you have more question.

Example manifest you can find in examples/cluster-autopilot.yaml

@mjura Thanks for raising this improvement. If the requirement is from a customer please can you open a JIRA for it, otherwise can you create an issue over at rancher/dashboard?

gaktive commented 11 months ago

@mjura & @kkaempf as @richard-cox noted, feature requests need to go through Product for prioritization since we have an existing list from them that are already scheduled.

kkaempf commented 11 months ago

@davidstauffer please create a respective JIRA and ping me again

This requires UI changes to test

Bumping comment. At the moment the UI changes are not in scope for 2.9.0
