Limit of total fields [10000] in index [dna] has been exceeded

There is an issue with how I've built the Elasticsearch index, need to explore further. Why so many types?

elastic_host:9200/dna/_mapping?pretty gives large numbers of dynamicProperties that are taxon names. This is probably the problem, so clearly I don't understand what I am doing :(
