SWS/S&M beta (build #6): issues/regressions #175

This is a "fake" issue I create so that people can report issues/regression about the upcoming beta (build #1), if any..

Please, answer this questions: What steps will reproduce the problem? What is the expected output? What do you see instead? What Reaper version #? Thanks!

Delete selected items takes and source file (no undo):

  1. Only deletes the take 1 slot here, and leaves all other takes still in the directory.
  2. Takes up to 20 seconds for the item to delete here (for a very short item), Vs instant with the deprecated action.

Steps to reproduce:

Insert an empty item apply fx several times delete using action

*Delete active take and source files in selected items (no undo) is perfect here. :)

Takes: build lanes for selected tracks

Running this action causes the first take to be removed, seems to be because it isnt coloured.

Plus, If you have the preference unchecked for:

Apprearance-media-Automatically color any recording pass that adds new takes to existing items

then it doesnt work at all.

If mixed ie some are recorded coloured and some not, the non-coloured takes are removed when building lanes.

delete selected items takes and source file: I confirm the slow (didn't look yet but CRAZY stuff!) though the item is correctly removed here. A RPP file (with media sources) would help.. build lanes issues: they all have the same explanation, not a biggie..

Hi Jeffos, been enjoying your new bits so far :) here's a collection of bugs and suggestions I have so far, not super neat but hope it will be clear enough

--BUGS-- (win7 64bit with reaper 3.67 pre11 32bit)

-the unlock icon is wrong way round on my version (when symbol is unlocked I can't write anything)

-The undos are being weird for me with multiple/consecutive item notes all being undone at the same time with just a single undo (perhaps this is a undo setting i have enabled as padre's lfo generator also causes undo issues?)

-"Auto icon/colour"_having same problem as reported in issue 68 , not getting both colour and icon to work at same time, it does seem to work when "forced" though

-got this crash on pasting a big text to an item note and then trying to change to another item's notes straight after ...

-"find"_ maybe when nothing is found the find box can show a "sad face" to the right of the 3 controls instead of popping up the box which slightly slows things down (especially if you have multiple monitors) :)

-"auto colour/icon"_ anyway that we could use something like "/" to have more than one name per filter? so if put in the filter "vocal/voice", if I type either of those words then it will trigger that colour/icon. (perhaps there's a reason not to but it would save time when doing things like "kick/bdrum/bass drum" etc..)

The Build Lanes actions don't do anything here on MIDI or Audio tracks, other S&M actions (like rotate lanes) work fine.

I had AutoColor on, but they still don't do anything with it switched off and new items recorded.

This is on Reaper 3.67 pre 5 and also 3.67 pre 11, Win XP.

They worked before (apart from the known issues with lane placement), but not since updating to the beta.

I should mention that the repro is just new project, single track, record three different length takes of decreasing size. eg bar 2 to bar 10 then bar 4 to bar 8 then bar 6 to bar 7.

Jeffos, just to be clear, the item IS removed here...but the only take that gets deleted from the directory is the active take, the other takes are still there (removed from the project window, but still exist in the project folder)

I can supply an .rpp if you need, but it happens on 2 different machines here...sounded more like I hadn't made myself clear.

Let me know if you do indeed need an rpp with media. :)

GUI- No other probs with GUI so far,

UNDOS- don't suppose having reaper pref "avoid restoring vst state on undo.." set to off could cause these "undo amnesias" right? :)

AUTO ICON/COLOUR- I have also found that with both on it freezes on loading big projects (100 tracks+) for about 30 secs before loading and then when changing tracks it has a delay of about 2 secs or more depending on how many tracks apart from the previously selected one the newly selected one is.

NOTES- the text I entered was only about 80 words, will try this again today and see if I still get it.

SUGGESTIONS- no worries!! ;)

@mbn: 80 words is ridiculous, I tested much "bigger" notes. Something else is going on.. I can't reproduce that one for the moment, if you have a repro (or any details about it), let me know. "Slow" auto icon with HUGE project already reported (JBradleyBush): but what are you doing, auto icon all the 100 tracks in one go? Can you post this project (without media) ?

Jeffos, the slow auto icon is happening just by loading the project and nothing else, try loading a big project with auto icon and colour ticked (before you load the project)that hasn't been "seen" by auto icon before, in my experience it always takes a long time to load the project and then selecting different tracks then takes a long time too.

It seems that with both boxes ticked it recans everything every time a new track is selected. Maybe it loads slowly because from what I can tell reaper loads new projects one track after the other and maybe auto icon and colour is trying to keep up with this by rescanning on every new track loaded.

Will upload a project soon but need to do some more tests. :)

Yes, my report is a total duplicate. I hadn't used the auto-colour take preference before, but now that I have enabled it, any recording made after enabling it exibits the lost first take (although in my case because I am recording different lengths to test the empty items for the 2nd and 3rd take span the bigger length taken by the first take).

What's affects it is what the auto-take-colour preference was set to when the recording passes were done. If recording were done with it off then Build Lanes doesn't do anything, recording with it ON the Build Lanes works (while discarding the first take). It doesn't then matter whether you then switch it off or on afterwards, Build Lanes still works (discarding take).

A small nit-pick regarding the Find window. It would be a lot better IMHO if when pressing the next/previous icons it would cycle round the tracks rather than getting to the end and coming up with a dialogue window.

@mbn: I'm looking to your item note crash: I still can't reproduce it.. When you said you copied some txt and switched to another item, did you copy in REAPER's item note dialog box or in the new view? also, this was perharps the auto icon crash: were you using auto icon at the same time?

someone else seeing that? any input appreciated?

@theartfulregster: not sure I understand "double click on the CC number in the Live Config to activate that set of parameters", do you mean launching the learn dialog box ? If so, not possible (only possible with fx param). about find next/previous: yes, sounds good ;)

Jeffos, not been able to get that crash again so far and i think it was copying from your note window to reapers item note window.

I could be wrong though.. good thing is it hasn't happened again since.

Last thing to mention, The auto colour/icon tick boxes (that decide whether they're forced or not), if they could be stored with the RPP/project file instead that would be fantastic.

This is so we can have it so older songs don't have their colour and icon auto changed but newer songs continue to do so, this would be very cool if possible. :)

If so, I give up this repro for the moment: I suspect this was the same auto icon crash fixed in beta 2.. auto color/icon prefs: this shouldn't be too hard, though I let the hand to Tim about that now (may be he has some cool surprises too ;-)

hi Jeffos - i cannot get the live config to work here, have tried a few things, firstly using reacontrol midi to send CC's via virtual midi port and back into reaper, then with control surface.
I've either misunderstood the instructions and/or i don't get it - or its not working as it should - i don't know!

does it listen for CC's on the selected 'input' track? does that track need midi as an input or midi coming from e.g another track?

maybe if you gave a clear instruction i can figure out what i am doing wrong!. many thanks. benk

Hi, no I just meant as an alternative to it receiving a CC value it could be useful (for non Live Use admittedly) to double click on the CC in the left hand column to activate that line.

First small buglet..... When Mute all but active track is not checked, the tracks in the TCP are not unselected when going onto the next CC value. When Mute all but active track is checked they are correctly unselected. I am testing using "Record enable selected track" so they are not going out of Record enable but it's handy to see the correct selection anyway, even when the Input track is being used.

I think I've found something strange happening with beta 2 now... Get this:

Open a new project, add about 8 tracks or so. Click the first one to select it, then press and hold Shift, then click on the last one to make a contiguous track selection. It is sluggish graphically.

If I revert back to previous SWS release, everything is lightning fast as it's supposed to be.

Also, this is a suggestion to keep visual consistency - Jeffos, could you move the "Dbl-click" (and you could really rename it to "Double-click" really) and "To selected" dropdowns along with your S&M logo ABOVE the list menu with 128 entries? This would visually coincide with the new Live Configs and Notes windows...

And while I'm nitpicking, I'd suggest a rename for "Notes/help" -> "Notes & Help" or "Notes/Help" :)

Also, an atomic nitpick - when docked, your S&M logo on Live Configs window is displaced several pixels to the right from the logo on Notes/help window ;) ;)

About sluggish multi-selection, doesn't matter what I'm using. I have Live Configes, FX Chains and Notes/Help docked. Even if they aren't focused, the sluggishness happens. If I close them from the Docker, the sluggishness goes away. GIF: http://a.imageshack.us/img683/8015/sluggishness.gif

Jeffos, confused now :) I do run win 7 64bit but I'm running the 32bit version of reaper though, I thought I needed to use the 32bit extension right?

I think the lock icon thing maybe to do with have a toolbar icon folder crammed full of icons and it's picking the wrong one to use. Strangely though my lock toolbar button works the right way round and with the same icon. I'll investigate more! :)

Anybody else getting crashes with Auto-Icon enabled and creating folder tracks via drag and drop? I first thought it was because I had an entry for child tracks, but it seems to be more complicated. Sorry for the broad description, I haven't found a sure way to reproduce yet. All I know by now is that it seems to happen only when the "Enable Auto-Icon" checkbox is ticked and when it happens, it happens consistently with that setting of Auto-color/icon.

I have another bug for you to look at with Live Setup (or Reaper (or me))...

Repro...

Create 2 lines in the Live Setup window, both for Track 01 CC000 and CC001. One select FX1 Preset 1, the other selects FX1 Preset 2.

Here when the GUI of FX1 is open nothing happens. When the GUI of FX1 is closed the name of the preset in the FX window has changed (when I reopen it to check), but the parameters of the synth don't.

I was messing around on the laptop last night and noticed this. On my main computer today the result is the same. Same version of Reaper 3.67 pre 11.

Hi, just to clarify - the sounds are not changing even when I have reopened the GUI and the preset has changed.

Repro...

Create 1 track. Insert ReaSynth on track 1. Create 3 presets for it if you don't have any. Create 3 Live Setup lines for Track 1 with FX1: Preset 1 on line 1, FX1: Preset 2 on line 2 and FX1: Preset 3 on line 3.

When the GUI of ReaSynth is open, switching between lines using the assigned CC does nothing at all, audio or visual changes of controls. With the GUI of ReaSynth closed, the displayed preset changes (confirmed by reopening the GUI), but the sound and FX parameters do not change.

I have tried this with Synth1, Albino 3, Orca and now ReaSynth and the presets do not change on any of them.

Oh, and one other request would be that there is visual feedback in the Live Configs screen to show what is being selected, like the blue line when a line is highlighted happening when CC selects a line.

Maybe also a dropdown with a user-definable delay "1/2 second, 1 second etc" between the line being highlighted and actually activated to avoid activating the wrong one (which could involve loading a big track template).

I (almost) promise not to add any more request to Live Configs 'cause I know you're busy with the rest of the stuff.

I'm just dipping my toe in now, but I noticed a little GUI thing. The drop-down next to "Track notes", etc. splits the text as in the attached.

I don't know which font is used there, but could that drop-down be moved to the right a bit?

Ok, Beta #3 just uploaded: all known issues should be fixed, except gofer's report that I'm unable to reproduce (gofer, see below!). Does someone else reproduce that?

Beta #3 changelog:

@gofer: I drag'n'dropped very, Very, VERY, hard with child/folder auto-icons, no crash, all good. Gofer, are you sure you used the beta #2 (or #3 now) ? There was a possible auto-icon crash in the build #1. if build #2 was used and even if you're not sure of the repro, can you post that project please?

@theartfulregster: preset issue not only visual, indeed.. bad news in the changelog about that (but some good ones too ;-)

@susan: thanks! hey that's a fat font! (what is the theme you're using? I'd like to test some other things with it..) but this should be ok in this build #3 (?)

I'm so sorry to get back on it late, Jeffos. I saw this happening in beta 2, but I guess the culprit was a hosed reaper.ini. If nobody else has comfirmed it, I think it's all false alert. As of the project, there was nothing special, blank, two new tracks and I moved one to create a folder. If anything, I guess the SWS part of the hosed Reaper.ini could maybe lead to insight, but on the other hand, I created my settings in a fresh reaper.ini and can't recreate myself since. Which is why I believe it has been a very local issue cumulated by several things wrong in reaper.ini and just decided to rear it's head right now when a long list of auto-color/icon entries was added.

Sorry for the inconveniences and thanks again for this great addition.
