Two more thoughts:

Our command v1 implementation can be found at https://github.com/robotpy/robotpy-wpilib/tree/2019/wpilib/wpilib/command ... so it might be useful
We wrote a HTML page that can convert java function definitions + comments to an appropriately typed python function definition + docstring: https://github.com/robotpy/robotpy-wpilib/blob/2019/devtools/convert_javadoc.html ... definitely saves a lot of time

I actually preserved that functionality in sphinxify as well
