A bunch of small changes to the email template, you will see the result in tonight's email.
I also changed how the email page works if you're not signed in.
It now puts up a button which, when clicked, directs you to Twitter to sign in.
When you do sign in, it redirects you back to the email page, which stores the access info in local storage that's accessible on all scripting.com pages. You're now logged in, and can Like posts, and comment on them, in addition to subscribing to email.
At this point, if you enter your email address and confirm by clicking the link in the email it sends, you should be registered to receive the emails.
I know JY was having trouble with this yesterday, which of course is good for the testing process.
Also if you aren't already following this thread, please do so now, so you can see the updates. Thanks. ;-)
I think this is awesome. I really forgot how much I missed DaveNet and Scripting News in my mailbox. They're formatted nicely, easy to read, and have the distinction of being one of only two email subscriptions -- the other being Monday Note. Now if it was only like the old, old days, where you could see all the mail addresses and chat with the titans of tech. Fat chance, eh?
The first two times I tried to subscribe, I seem to have waited too long (55 and 17 minutes) and the link expired. Other than that no problems.
It expires after five minutes.
Now you can receive Scripting News every night via email. It's still in testing and there's a little more development work to do, but it's ready for people to try it out.
How to report problems
Please you have to be good at error reports of the form: 1. I did this, 2. Expected this, but 3. This is what actually happened. Screen shots can be helpful. Also in case of errors, check the JavaScript console in the browser.
Signing up
Go to this page: http://scripting.com/email/.
If you're not logged in to scripting.com via Twitter, you'll see a button that when clicked will log you in. This is a requirement so that we can make unsubscribing easy and reliable.
Then enter your email address and click the Confirm button. An email is sent to that address containing a link. Click on the link to complete your subscription. You should get a confirmation dialog in the browser.
Every night
Just after midnight Eastern, an email is sent to all subscribers containing the posts from scripting.com for the previous day.
There is an Unsubscribe link at the bottom of each email. Other people will not be able to unsub on your behalf if you forward the emails.
It uses the same Twitter-based identity system that Likes currently use, so you don't have to sign on again if you're already signed on that way.
Please report any problems here. Hope you like it! :-)
