I'm starting to use GitHub for work on my blog. Why not? It's got good communication and collaboration tools. Why not hook it up to a blog?

If you know your TLDs from your ABCs your advice is welcome.

It's not cheap. Here's the ICANN page with (very long) PDF guides. https://newgtlds.icann.org/en/applicants/agb

I replied to your tweet, but here's slightly longer form responses to your specific questions: How much money does it take, up front and periodically? ICANN application fee last time was USD$185k one time. You'd also have their annual fees and per transaction fees. You'd also need to factor in the various fees and costs associated with a registry backend. Who gets the money? ICANN gets the application fees and transaction fees.

How much time does it take to apply for the TLD, and what are the requirements to be approved? Last time round the entire process took about a year or so but the rollout launch took several years Can you make a TLD non-profit, and does that affect the cost? Yes you can but it won't impact the cost Is it only for companies or can individuals register TLDs? Only companies can run a TLD.

What questions have I missed? It depends what you want to do. There's a big difference between a niche TLD that might only attract a couple of hundred registrants vs a broadly attractive one that has mass market appeal.
