I have been using Project Manager extension and it has one welcome feature that I think will be useful in workspace explorer as well.

It's the ability to assign tags (one or multiple) to a workspace. You can group your workspaces by said tags in the tree view. Assigning each tag a custom icon would be great as well.

I took a look at the extension you mention. It is a very cool 😎 feature. It represents a large amount of work in my estimation. At the moment I'm largely just patching and making small feature updates to this project. I'm happy to take a PR if you want to take this on. Otherwise I'll resolve this issue as wontfix.
