Definition (from http://www.geonames.org/ontology/ontology_v1.0.rdf) "tracts of land, smaller than a continent, surrounded by water at high water" however, there is much finer granularity e.g. land-tied island -> "a coastal island connected to the mainland by barrier beaches, levees or dikes" etc. maybe import the geographical concenpts from there?
