Format should be an ISO Country code instead of free text

rondlg commented 4 years ago

We should separate out ISO country fro Country to allow for older country names and/or ambiguous borders.

dbloom commented 4 years ago

Agreed @rondlg

Similarly, only one place name should be permitted in the field - yes, folks put more than one country name into the country field more often than you might think. This should be true for all geography fields.

If you allow older names you'll probably have quite a challenge putting together a controlled vocabulary for it... (not that it can't be done, but it will be a super dynamic vocabulary I suspect, as new "ways of calling places" surface from the data)... If you go for ambiguous borders things could get worse... So in that case I would re-think either the definition of the term or the expectation for the values to conform to a controlled vocabulary...

As for a potential vocabulary, there is the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names that could be considered.

Question: is this Country the field where the collection resides, yes? as compared to describing which countries (Plural) a particular collection description is about?

We (if we don't have it) need a separate field for sharing 0 to many countries, for sharing where a given set of objects were gathered -- to put in a given Collection Description.

qgroom commented 4 years ago

@debpaul This is part of Class:OrganisationalUnitAddress So it refers to one country and that is a current country

rondlg commented 2 years ago

If this is split into 2 fields: one for a text string country and the other for the ISO country we need a vocab for the 2nd of these but not the first.

ben-norton commented 2 years ago

Why both?

ben-norton commented 2 years ago

I have an API endpoint with the ISO country codes. I cant recall the URL off-hand. Give me 12 hours to post it.
