Only perdurants have temporal extents (coverages). It seems that temporalCoverageType is really about an event (a perdurant) in the history of some endurant (e.g. a sample).
Perhaps consider modeling an endurant to have a history that is a sequence of events -- e.g birth, death, lifetime, collection, preservation, accession to a collection, origination (deposition, crystallization), metamorphism.. Those events have temporal extents (coverage).

We've updated the definitions and usage to "hopefully" disambiguate this property and the class that it sits within https://github.com/tdwg/cd/issues/333.

That clarifies things, but I think the extremely general label 'temporalCoverage' will cause confusion.... A label like 'Collection Establishment Date Range' would certainly be clearer; this might be a situation where an opaque property URI would be a good idea...
