Incorporating v2 Edits #22

Closed tgherzog closed 9 years ago

tgherzog commented 9 years ago

I've incorporated the edits from the v2 revision.

Use the "compare" feature in the wiki to see line-by-line changes (like this), or use the Google doc for reference. The major new sections include:

TODO: revise section summaries at the end of "60 seconds"

Outstanding substantive issues are flagged with blue links in the Toolkit to Github tickets.

Re: 60 Seconds: Edited the first paragraph after "About" (now two paragraphs) and edited the first entry, Essentials. When you have a chance, let me know if this revised version of Essentials is what you were looking for.

lindaklinger commented 9 years ago

Where is the compare feature located? Also, I don't see any flagged issues in 60 Seconds -- are there any that I'm missing? Thanks

What do you think of this table?

lindaklinger commented 9 years ago

In case you didn’t get my e-mail from lindaklinger.com http://lindaklinger.com/, here’s what I replied:

It’s good — I’d reverse it and have the Sector side on the right, since as a reader, I’d look for the Sector first, not the name of the source, and the Sector is alphabetized and easy to find what you’re looking for.

Just to cover all my bases…

I sent this same response using lindaklinger.com http://lindaklinger.com/, my iCloud account, and now my aol account. Let me know if you received any or all of those responses: It’s good — I’d reverse it and have the Sector side on the right, since as a reader, I’d look for the Sector first, not the name of the source, and the Sector is alphabetized and easy to find what you’re looking for.

I'm not sure what you mean. I see your responses in Github. I didn't get any emails directly from you, aside from the notifications that Github sends when anyone adds a comment to an issue.

For Examples, finished editing the intro text. In paragraph 2, we had a remaining reference to "catalogs," which I changed to initiatives.

tgherzog commented 9 years ago

And I just finished the section summaries in the "60 seconds" section.

I'm now working on copying everything into a new Google doc for review.

Regarding Benefits, you said you edited only the intro and first paragraph. This relates to the second paragraph, so I copied it here rather than risk undoing the hyperlink in the wiki. I still stumble over the abrupt reference to data as oil, as that feels out of context with the previous discussion, and then I hesitate again before I realize the term specifies crude oil, not cooking oil, so I suggest using the earlier reference to data as a commodity to smooth this transition. Here's my proposed edit: Similar to other global commodities, data has significant potential to provide benefits. In fact, data has been referred to as the new oil, because while both data and oil have intrinsic value, they both must be "refined" or otherwise transformed to realize their full potential.

Finished minor comma/etc. edits to Tech Options intro. A suggestion to clarify the definitions of catalog and platform: I like the "front door" image regarding the platform -- very helpful. I'd like to see something as vivid for the catalog, too; the reference to the catalog as the "online centerpiece" is okay but doesn't help me visualize where the catalog is located in my imaginary illustration of a catalog and a platform. You mention that the platform accesses data, but the catalog also offers access to datasets, which further dims my immediate understanding of what the platform does differently than the catalog re: data access.
