1. Clone the Repository

First, you'll need to clone the repository to your local machine. This creates a local copy of the repository that you can work on.

  1. Go to the repository page on GitHub.
  2. Click the green Code button and copy the URL (either HTTPS or SSH).
  3. Open a terminal on your local machine and run the following command:
git clone <repository-url>

2. Create a New Branch

Before making changes, create a new branch. This keeps your changes separate from the main branch.

  1. Navigate to the cloned repository directory:
cd <repository-name>

Replace with the name of the cloned repository.

  1. Create a new branch and switch to it:
git checkout -b <branch-name>

3. Add & Commit Changes

After making changes to files, you'll need to stage and commit them.

  1. Stage the changes:
git add .
  1. Commit the changes with a descriptive message:
git commit -m "Your commit message"

4. Push the Branch to GitHub

Push your new branch to GitHub so others can see it and review your changes.

git push -u origin <branch-name>

5. Create a Pull Request

To merge your changes into the main branch, create a pull request.

  1. Go to the repository page on GitHub.
  2. You should see a prompt to create a pull request for your recently pushed branch. Click Compare & pull request.
  3. Add a title and description for your pull request.
  4. Click Create pull request.

6. Review and Merge

Once you've created a pull request, team members can review your changes. After the review, a team member with write access will merge your pull request into the main branch.
