Meeting October 10-11 #1

Open tracykteal opened 9 years ago

tracykteal commented 9 years ago

We had discussed having an (unofficial) Moore DDD Training Club meeting, inspired by the training interest and engagement of @ctb @ethanwhite @karthik @tracykteal and @MatthewTurk.

Any one interested in 'data driven discovery' training efforts is welcome!

Dates will be just after the Moore meeting,

Dates: October 10-11 Location: Davis, CA

tracykteal commented 9 years ago

Proposal for timing:
Start noon on Saturday, October 10th End around noon on Sunday, October 11th so people can fly back home

Proposal for structure Basically an unconference, and we can open discussions as issues in advance. Beginning of Saturday, open discussion to identify shared challenges and interests or discuss topics that have come up as issues. The rest of Saturday and Sunday, work on particular issues or continued discussion if needed. Saturday evening: working/conversing dinner

cgreene commented 9 years ago

I'm definitely interested. Have you thought about staying in Seattle to cut down on travel? If it is the two days immediately following it might be easier.

Yes, there are both venue issues and timing issues for those who aren't DDD Investigators (including BIDS/CDS members and Tracy as well)...

strasser commented 9 years ago

Fab idea! I'm excited about leveraging our synergies to energize our forward leaning tendencies!

cgreene commented 9 years ago

As a plus, airfare with the Seattle to Sacramento leg is actually about the same price as a round trip to Seattle for me. It might be similar for others. If we can nail down the location (Davis/Berkeley), I can go ahead and get booking my flights out of the way. I'll be in if this happens. Thanks!

tracykteal commented 9 years ago

@ctb can get space at Davis, so let's set it to be in Davis. I'll edit the issue.

tracykteal commented 9 years ago

Let @ctb or @tracykteal know if you need help with lodging in Davis. Good places are

Best place to fly in to is Sacrament (SMF). It's about 20 minutes from the airport to Davis. There are buses, shuttles and Uber for that transport.

strasser commented 9 years ago

FYI I shared this link / info with comms people at the Data Science Environments. I expect info to go out today or next week.

cgreene commented 9 years ago

@tracykteal Thanks for the places to stay!

I also have a broader question. Is this restricted to the same set of people as the symposium? I think that someone who I've previously worked with (Dan Himmelstein) might have things to add, as he's been using thinklab to pursue a project: http://thinklab.com/p/rephetio I'd be interested to hear his perspective after his experience with crowd-advised science and how that relates to open science, but I can also ask him outside of this venue. He is at UCSF though, so it'd be an easy trip up.

cgreene commented 9 years ago

@tracykteal: Turns out neither of those hotels have rooms available on the 10th. The only place I could get a room was a La Quinta: http://www.laquintadavis.com/

tracykteal commented 9 years ago

Definitely not restricted. Please invite him or others you think would be interested!

katyhuff commented 9 years ago

@strasser - the info has reached us at BIDS. I'm interested (if BIDS folks are indeed invited.)

tracykteal commented 9 years ago

Anyone who's interested is invited! I'll reflect that at the top of the issue. @katyhuff so glad you're interested!

davclark commented 9 years ago

Given that it's at Davis, I feel like I've got to come. Please keep me in the loop!

Will there be sweatbands and stuff for this training club?

ctb commented 9 years ago

I've reserved the Bennett Conference Room, http://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/ccah/about_ccah/facility.cfm, for this. Both days. It's not that close to, well, anything, but there is nearby parking and it's a nice bike ride.

We may be able to get room in the new Data Science Initiative space in the Library, but renovation is still ongoing. Closer to the day we can revisit and see how the DSI is coming along.

ramanshah commented 9 years ago

I'm quite interested in this - thanks for the organizational legwork!

arokem commented 9 years ago

I'm planning on attending, and others at UW eScience might join as well. I will open a couple of issues on things I would like to discuss in this context.

bdsullivan commented 9 years ago

Just booked flights - super excited to be attending! :) Edited: Serious Problem: hotel. Can't find anything closer than 3-6 miles from campus (e.g. Days Inn or hotels in Dixon). Any suggestions? Any other women who might want to share a room for Saturday night?

tracykteal commented 9 years ago

Glad you're coming! Have you looked at airbnb? @ctb anything we can look into?

karthik commented 9 years ago

@bdsullivan Try on Hipmunk I just grabbed a room at the Best Western Palm Court (possibly the most central hotel for Davis, but sorry that I grabbed the last room) but there are many others within Davis limits including the Hyatt. Even if the hotel directly does not have availability, you can find rooms through other sites.

bdsullivan commented 9 years ago

@karthik Thanks for the tip - unfortunately, I just checked Hipmunk, and the only two hotels showing availability for the 10th are the Days Inn & the Country Inn & Suites (in Dixon). The Hyatt is listed as unavailable. There are some airbnb options, but I'm not super comfortable with that in an area I don't know :\

karthik commented 9 years ago

@bdsullivan My bad, I booked for September 10th :anguished: I might look into airbnb now and see who else from Berkeley might be interested.

bdsullivan commented 9 years ago

I've temporarily booked a room at the Days Inn + a rental car (both easily cancelled if something better gets figured out). Otherwise, I'm arriving from SEA on Delta 4692 Saturday morning if anyone else is on that flight and wants a ride into Davis (I can also offer a ride to/from the Days Inn on Sat night/Sunday morning if others end up booking there).

cgreene commented 9 years ago

@bdsullivan: I'll book the same flight, and I'd appreciate a carpool! Thanks!

arokem commented 9 years ago

I've booked a seat on that same flight, and also have a room booked at Days Inn. In fact, I have a room with two beds in it, so would be happy to share that room with someone else.

matthewturk commented 9 years ago

I'll be there, but haven't booked flights yet. Excited!

strasser commented 9 years ago

flights booked. hotel secured. Looking forward to it!

karthik commented 9 years ago

@strasser what flight from Oakland to Davis Regional? Also what hotel?

strasser commented 9 years ago

Alaska 354 arriving at SMF at 11:00 am. I'll have a rental car to get to Davis. Staying at University Park Inn.

There's a Davis regional?! I thought that was just for drones.

karthik commented 9 years ago

Also staying at University Park.

There's a Davis regional?!

Davis does not have a commercial airport.

cboettig commented 9 years ago

Thanks @tracykteal for pointing me here; I'll be at the Seattle meeting and then would love to join everyone in Davis.

ramanshah commented 9 years ago

@strasser I also booked Alaska 354 on Saturday morning. I'd love to ride with you if you have a spot.

I'm still figuring out lodging.

Edit: I had enough trouble finding Saturday night lodging and flights home that I'm going to stay in Sacramento and fly out first thing Sunday. Still looking forward to attending on Saturday, though!

strasser commented 9 years ago

@ramanshah happy to give you a ride!

ramanshah commented 9 years ago

Thanks so much @strasser. :)

ashander commented 9 years ago

thanks @strasser for the heads up! I'm at UC Davis and keen. Sadly (?) have a camping trip planned for this weekend.

I'll keep an eye out for other UCD/Berkeley events on these topics. I do hope to meet @ctb and @tracykteal sooner or later

matthewturk commented 9 years ago

I'm on Alaska 354 too -- any room left in the car, @strasser ?

strasser commented 9 years ago

@MatthewTurk absolutely!

ctb commented 8 years ago

Suggested topic: how can we train each other? See #4.

bdsullivan commented 8 years ago

Anyone interested in getting in a ~10 mile run immediately after we adjourn (ideal pace ~11min/mi, but totally happy to go slower)? I've got a 5:30 pm flight, and would love to get my weekend run in before I head to the airport... [also, any reasonable suggestions for where I could shower if I did attempt this insanity?]

matthewturk commented 8 years ago

Put me down for possibly joining in on that -- I'm a bit out of shape but have been ramping up to just below that.

ctb commented 8 years ago

We can provide showers. (Maybe not much water, though :)

blahah commented 8 years ago

Can't be there in person, but I'd like to follow along/contribute remotely to the extent possible. Any plans to stream things, live chat (gitter https://gitter.im/tracykteal/moore-ddd-training-club created by @tracykteal visiting link), etc.?

tracykteal commented 8 years ago

Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!

We'll have an informal lunch starting at 12:00 if you're in town already and start the meeting on campus at 1:30.

We've posted an agenda here: https://github.com/tracykteal/moore-ddd-training-club/blob/gh-pages/agenda.md

and room location information: https://github.com/dib-lab/dib-training/blob/pub/Bennett-room.rst

tracykteal commented 8 years ago

If you already know of ideas for breakouts, go ahead and start an issue on the topic.

tracykteal commented 8 years ago

If you want something to read on the plane flight, Stalzer & Mentzel's paper on “A Preliminary Review of Influential Works in Data-Driven Discovery” http://arxiv.org/abs/1503.08776 does a nice job of outlining data-driven areas of research. Those could be a framework for areas of training.

It's a nice, brief overview and also related to a breakout topic idea: https://github.com/tracykteal/moore-ddd-training-club/issues/5

tracykteal commented 8 years ago

@blahah this one might be tough for remote participation, since it's mainly small breakouts. If you're interested in any of the breakouts already listed though, if you subscribe, we can update them with where documentation/conversations are taking place. We'll also create new issues for ongoing breakouts.

We could do Gitter or Slack, or just Twitter.

valentina-s commented 8 years ago

I am joining too. Looking forward to it!

bdsullivan commented 8 years ago

@MatthewTurk @tracykteal Just realized my flight is at 5:30 pm (not 7:30 -- apparently that's its arrival time). Should we consider running in the morning instead of at lunchtime? Then we could also do In n' Out midday...

arokem commented 8 years ago

I would join for a morning run!
