Tweaks - misc mods #4

misc changes including most recently some bash-isms and some spelling corrections...

This is the same as pull req #6 but not rebased. If it's all the same to you and you're going to merge one or the other, I'd prefer that this one be merged, for coherence. But if you're not comfortable with all the merges or would rather maintain a linear history, use the rebased one and I'll manage.
