Why does the virtualmin forum no longer work? where can I communicate? #667

Open AndyAlvarezDev opened 1 year ago

AndyAlvarezDev commented 1 year ago

The forum only loads the "loader" and nothing else... it's been like this for a long time, are you aware?

After answering me you can delete the issue, it is not the right place but I can't find an email to contact.

Is this the same forum URL failing to load for you? virtualmin forum

swelljoe commented 1 year ago

It works for me.

That spinner happens when Discourse is in the process of restarting after an update, but I haven't updated in a couple of days, so I dunno why you'd be stuck on it. Try forcing a reload (Shift-reload or Ctrl-reload or Apple-reload or whatever, I don't know all the incantations across all the operating systems, you need to clear the cache).

swelljoe commented 1 year ago

Oh, but a critical update is available, so I'm pushing that now, so that spinner will occur for everyone for a couple minutes starting about now.

iliajie commented 1 year ago

It all works just fine now!

AndyAlvarezDev commented 1 year ago

@iliajie Well, https://forum.virtualmin.com/ still doesn't work for me, I have tried it on different computers and mobile devices and the same thing happens in all of them!

iliajie commented 1 year ago

Have you tried an incognito tab and/or another browser/device?

chris001 commented 1 year ago

@AndyAlvarezDev I'd try with a VPN so your location would be in a different country, see if that works.

Yesterday it didn't work, today I tried and it's working

Thanks for the feedback, Andy! I will close this ticket then.

AndyAlvarezDev commented 1 year ago

@iliajie Today the same thing happened again, the forum no longer works and crashes in the loader...

swelljoe commented 1 year ago

If it's still happening, or happens again, can you let me know the IP address you are connecting from? I would like to look in the log to see what the server thinks is happening. None of us can reproduce the problem, so I don't know where to begin on troubleshooting it.

AndyAlvarezDev commented 1 year ago

@swelljoe It keeps happening, in fact now I can't enter the forum, but my IP address is dynamic, I wouldn't do much to provide you with my IP address (Note: I use IPV6), you can log into my computer and check for yourself through anydesk if you wish

swelljoe commented 1 year ago

I need an IP so I can search the logs for what happened when you tried to visit. It doesn't matter if it's dynamic, I only need to look at one such failure.

swelljoe commented 1 year ago

Also, have you tried it in other browsers and in a private window?

iliajie commented 1 year ago

my IP address (Note: I use IPV6), you can log into my computer and check for yourself through anydesk if you wish

Perhaps, you're in IPv6 network only — that would explain it.

Try using this test ipv6test.google.com and see if you get any errors?

swelljoe commented 1 year ago

That's a reasonable guess. We don't have IPv6 setup for that host, but I could do so. I just assumed everyone on an IPv6 network would have an IPv4 gateway.

contenidosonline commented 1 year ago

still doesn't work for me, same issue.

swelljoe commented 1 year ago

I'm going to ignore every subsequent post until somebody gives me an IP to look up in the logs. I can't guess what's going wrong with just "it doesn't work". It works for me, so I need a clue here.

contenidosonline commented 1 year ago

Sorry, my ip is: 181.13.196.39 (Argentina)

Tried on private window (Vivaldi Browser and Firefox)

Thanks

swelljoe commented 1 year ago

That's useful information. It tells us it's not just IPv6 addresses, anyway.

contenidosonline commented 1 year ago

just tried with links browser (only text browser) and seems works (from the same ip)

swelljoe commented 1 year ago

Can you check the Console in your browser (not links, the one that isn't working). I'm hoping maybe there's a JavaScript error or something?

Also, can you try it in an Incognito/Private window with no extensions enabled?

contenidosonline commented 1 year ago

This in a normal windows browser:

swelljoe commented 1 year ago

I see several requests from your IP from "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/116.0.0.0 Safari/537.36", and they're all successful requests, so the problem seemingly has to be JavaScript or some other client-side issue. (I also see your links request, also successful.)

swelljoe commented 1 year ago

Click on the "Console" and reload. That's where errors will appear, if any.

So, the googletagmanager one is for analytics. And, the CDN one is, well, the CDN we use for some forum assets. I don't know which of those, if either, failing would prevent the page from loading fully. Probably the CDN would, though, since that's all the JavaScript and CSS.

If you try it in another browser, and in a private/incognito window with no extensions enabled (ad block, in particular), does it start working? (I'm not opposed to adblock, we don't run ads, but I do want to try to narrow this down to a specific problem I can work on.)

swelljoe commented 1 year ago

I tried installing Vivaldi on my Linux desktop, and it works for me, even with ad block and tracker blocking enabled, so that's not it. But, I'd still like you to give it a try with tracker/ad blocking disabled just to see if we get different behavior.

chris001 commented 1 year ago

Looks like the error messages in the browser is 504 Gateway Timeout... is there a proxy server running in front of the origin web server?

swelljoe commented 1 year ago

As mentioned above those are not our servers. Those are Google analytics and a CDN.

contenidosonline commented 1 year ago

Hi

Tried again with a vpn with EU ip (I'm from Argentina)

IP: 217.23.3.96

Vivaldi browser on private windows, without any add blocker (you can see that on image) virtualmin6

iliajie commented 1 year ago

What if you tried using VPN?

contenidosonline commented 1 year ago

hi

Look at the note above .

thanks

iliajie commented 1 year ago

You should check deeper by looking into the Network tab inside your browser's console to see if some requests are getting blocked/dropped to either forum.virtualmin.com or any CDNs that our forum is using.

Please don't make a mystery out of it. Provide more details about failed network requests!

For starters try opening this link and see if it works.

contenidosonline commented 1 year ago

I just checked again and it works! I am using the same IP and it works fine with the ad blocker. I don't know what happened, but now it seems to work fine.

Please don't make a mystery out of it. Provide more details about failed network requests!

I'm not a developer, I probably don't handle the details of debugging these applications, but I'm not making any mystery, I just want to collaborate with the project.

iliajie commented 1 year ago

.. and it works fine with the ad blocker.

Excellent! Happy to hear that!

Please let us know if that doesn't work again.

swelljoe commented 1 year ago

We still don't know whether OP had the same problem and if their problem is resolved. But, we also don't know what the now-resolved problem was coming from Argentina. So, we still have little idea of what specific thing is causing the problem (I mean, it looks kinda like the CDN and maybe analytics was unreachable for a while...analytics wouldn't prevent page displaying, but maybe CDN would, I'm not sure...it's also possible it was a connection problem to our server, though I didn't see any errors in the above screenshots related to our server).

So, I don't know. :man_shrugging:

AndyAlvarezDev commented 1 year ago

Hello, I was away these days and I couldn't communicate before, I'm sure it's something related to IP addresses because it doesn't work with the ISP Antel in Uruguay, but here it's the border with Brazil and if I try with the ISP Osirnet in Brazil, then it works good!

In either of the two internet providers I have used both IPV4 and IPV6...

Or perhaps the server's CDN is restricting traffic depending on the foreign connection...

contenidosonline commented 1 year ago

Now is not working again from Argentina (IP:181.13.196.49) - Personal Flow ISP (former Telecom SA). I'm near Uruguay's border (Entre Rios State).

contenidosonline commented 1 year ago

Joe your CDN have a POP on Argentina/Uruguay ? Maybe that the issue.

chris001 commented 1 year ago

@contenidosonline @AndyAlvarezDev If you install this "cloudflare warp client" on your local machine, it will give you a new IP owned by cloudflare, and this just might bypass any ISP/CDN issue that you're experiencing:.
