Personally I go for giant text with landscape mode in any app that has a lot of text as it allows me to hold the gadget at a distance and maintain readability. Characters per line is the best yardstick and I'd be happy with 50, though for a given font size that will depend on device orientation and device size. 4chan's css handles this pretty well for large screens by having a maximum line length, so there's no need for extra resources: a setting to make a larger text size should be OK.
