@mickimnet, @philipbrembeck mentioned (https://github.com/waydabber/BetterDisplay/issues/1343#issuecomment-1701680691) that he is willing to work on the German localization. You guys can cooperate on it if you'd like, but since @mickimnet was first and I don't know how is the current progress, I'll let him decide on how to move forward. My recommendation is to divide up the work + review each other's work in the process. :)
and again, I'd like to thank both of you guys for the help and the offer, I really appreciate it!
Hi @philipbrembeck, I'll be finished with the translation by the end of the weekend. Are you interested in reviewing, what I've done?

Hi there, sorry for the late reply. Yes, let’s do this 😊
@philipbrembeck are you in the Discord server? I could use some feedback about the translation of some words.
@philipbrembeck are you in the Discord server? I could use some feedback about the translation of some words.
I could join today evening if that's also fine? 😊
Yes, of course. Communication is easier there.
@mickimnet I'm online 😊 (jakejakejakejakejake)
@waydabber the following is the current partial translation file. de-20230917.xcloc.zip
Thanks! Here is an updated localization file with all the current strings included (this is still subject to change).
Hi, I added some updates to the latest zip in this thread :)
Just a question regarding how to align the "you/your/..." usage properly. Which way do you prefer in the app?
And is there some context-based difference when "display" is used instead of "Display" or vice versa?
Hi @s0wx - thanks for the input! 👍 I think an informal approach is better. Regarding display vs Display - I am not sure, can you give me an example? :)
but: @mickimnet is responsible for the German translation so I trust he will consult you on how to move forward (@mickimnet - I think you should consult @s0wx on how you guys can work together, maintain the consistency of the translation style, etc).
Note: for a more interactive way to collaborate, here is the localization forum on Discord: https://discord.com/channels/903276571773771796/1142501637961826404
Hello @s0wx,
Hi, I added some updates to the latest zip in this thread :) … And is there some context-based difference when "display" is used instead of "Display" or vice versa?
Thank you, for looking at the translation. I took a quick glance at your changes and would prefer your feedback, after I completed the translation. I try to use the official Apple Glossary for German for the translation and I'm currently building an own glossary for the translation. The glossary will also include the reasoning why Philip and I choose what translation.
Therefore I would prefer if you check the translation when we're done and have the glossary posted.
Take care Mick
Hey @waydabber and @mickimnet,
... Regarding display vs Display - I am not sure, can you give me an example? :) ...
Some examples in the localization file are
Allow disconnecting external non-natively connected displays
Forget Display
Connect all displays
/Connect All Displays
(both are in the file)I was also a bit confused when the display is considered as monitor
and when as display
. Because in german both words also exist and some localization of display
is replaced with monitor
and a monitor is just an external display.
Example in the file:
Advanced displays settings
... Therefore I would prefer if you check the translation when we're done and have the glossary posted. ...
Sure, happy to help you. Just let me know then. I'm also in the Discord server and have set the same username as here. So you can also ping me there or write me a message, as soon as you have posted the glossary or need any feedback in between. :)
Hey @s0wx,
Currently I use "Display", when generally speaking about displays and "Monitor" if explicitly referring to the hardware.
I'll send you a friend request in Discord, so that I can create a group chat with Philip.
Take care Mick
I updated the localization file in the https://github.com/waydabber/BetterDisplay/discussions/2165 opening post to reflect the latest v2.1.0 pre-release version.
Let me know if you have any questions or issues with the translation. Also, if there is a partial translation and you want me to compile a version with it included so you can see the existing progress in the app itself, let me know! :)
Hi! :-) i would like to help to translate BetterDisplay to german. How can i join the Discord Forum? Cheers Frank
Hi @FrankBeckerDE - just enter enter here: https://discord.gg/aKe5yCWXSp and under "forum" select "Localization" and there you are. Contact @mickimnet on how to divide up the work!
I made some changes in how you BetterDisplay localization works. Here is the announcement: https://github.com/waydabber/BetterDisplay/discussions/2165#discussioncomment-8006022
@dotWee - please add a comment here so I can add you to Assignees as well! Thank you!
Hi @mickimnet @philipbrembeck @s0wx @FrankBeckerDE - thank you guys for volunteering to work on the German localization! Since there doesn't seem to be much progress/feedback on this, I need to ask - are you still working on this? If not, that is completely fine and I completely understand.
I am currently unsure on how to proceed with the German localization. It feels somewhat unprofessional to have a few strings here and there translated - I am thinking of maybe removing the localization from upcoming app versions until at least the menu and general options are translated (the long/complicated sentence-like explanation details are less of a priority). But if there will be some resurgence of activity, that would of course be even better.
I understand that translating the app is difficult + this is totally a volunteer work, so don't take this as any kind of pressure (I am just trying to keep things in order). Thank you! :)
Hey @waydabber, is there currently anyone working on the translation? If not then I would be happy to contribute. I have already had a look at the translation table and started translating a few strings for fun, but I would only continue if there is a need for it (since it is quite a long list).
(Also, it probably goes without saying but I am a native German speaker)
Hi @niklasbogensperger - I think @mickimnet would be happy to have someone else contribute! I just updated the strings in the localization repo right now, feel free to work on it. Also, please look at the German Glossary (https://github.com/waydabber/BetterDisplay-localization/blob/main/Localization%20Glossary%20German.markdown) for consistency!
Thank you!
I had a closer look at the glossary just now; are the entries in it set in stone? For example, for "custom (resolution)" I would suggest "benutzerdefinierte (...)" instead of "eigene (...)". I feel like I have come across the former wording in a software context much more often. The literal translation would be something like "user-defined" (as oppposed to just "own" for the other option).
But I am happy to stick to the current glossary as well, if changes are too troublesome or people disagree with my suggestion.
I am not sure anything is set in stone, but I can't comment on this. I think you should just proceed as you think most appropriate, and @mickimnet will chime in when he reviews things. Translation can be an iterative process, it does not need to be perfect the first time, I can always update the localization in a newer version of the app, so no worries. :)
Thanks all of you who are working on this!
I created a pull request (#57) with my additions and changes, happy to hear what you think :)
Thank you @niklasbogensperger! German now stands at 95%
An interim build with the updated translation is now available for testing (go to Applications/Updates and enable Pre-Release and Interim Pre-Release to get it).
I made some technical changes, please make sure you use the latest version from the repo before finishing up with the remaining 5%! :)
I created another pull request with the remaining translations and some changes that got lost during the merge of the last one.
I can only test some parts of the app since i don't have Pro, but I did find some issues:
Usually, German strings are longer than their English counterparts, which results in UI elements like this (on the App settings page): In this case, at least, the buttons resize when the window is enlarged:
However, there are several areas I have found already where this is not the case (i.e. elements are not resized in any case, permanently cutting off the label or overlapping with other UI): Licensing screen: Keyboard shortcuts: Menu visibility: Display group synchronization:
I am uncertain in at least three cases:
Shift and Option keys sometimes have their symbols next to them, sometimes not. Also, sometimes they are in all caps, other times not. Is that desired depending on context? Also, one string in English has the option sign turned around (⎇ instead of ⌥).
I found a handful of minor typos and inconsistencies in the English strings, but I am not sure how to change these since the IDs of the string also have to be changed. The same goes for the typo with the option key symbol above.
Anything with mirroring
* According to the glossary, "mirroring" is translated to "gespiegelt" while "mirror displays" is translated as "Displays synchronisieren" (lit. "synchronize displays"). But in the English strings, "sync" and "synchronize" are also used in another context. Is this overloading desired?
Re this - I had another look at the Apple glossary, and "screen mirroring" is translated as "Bildschirmsynchronisierung" (lit. "screen synchronization"), so the terms used in BetterDisplay are similar to the Apple terminology. Apple also similarly overloads the term "Synchronisation" in German because it is also used in the context of matching data or settings in addition to mirroring. I guess leaving this as-is means matching the translation to Apple's, but also in the context of this app the different meanings are within the same scope and might still be confusing.
Hey @niklasbogensperger - just read you can't fully test the app as you don't have Pro and this hinders your work. Please contact me on the app's Discord channel so we can fix this! :)
Also, if you found typos @niklasbogensperger or inconsistencies in the English strings, pls let me know. I will fix these in the app and update the localization repo accordingly. You can't fix these at your end as that would mess up translation id matching with the app.
@niklasbogensperger - thanks for the note about shift, option keys. I fixed the reversed symbol + standardized the English text (which is first capitalized with symbol).
Regarding the unclear translations, I think the first two is fine. About mirroring vs synchronization of displays - it is unfortunate if these two are conflated in the translations as there is a synchronization feature in the app (for various display settings, like brightness etc) which is definitely not mirroring. It would be better to use a distinct terminology for those.
@waydabber - I joined the Discord and wrote you a message with the typos I found :)
Do you plan on changing anything about the UI element layouts? In that case I could try make a more comprehensive list of instances where the label texts are cut off in locales with longer strings.
As for the problem with overloading the mirroring translation - I think keeping "screen mirroring" as "Bildschirme synchronisieren" makes sense, since the same terminology is used by Apple in Control Center as well and has been used by BetterDisplay until now. Maybe for the new "settings synchronization" something like "Einstellungsabgleich" (lit. "alignment [as in 'matching', not as in 'geometric'] of settings") would fit well?
About the text label cut-offs, I'll see what can be done. Localized text is applied on-the-fly by the system so the most I can do is to alter the layout in a way that there is generally more room. If there is any way to make the translation shorter where there is an issue, we could try that avenue first.
I don't speak German so I can't comment on the mirroring vs synchronization translation question. :)
I think e.g. the text on the licensing screen buttons can be made a bit shorter (keeping a similar but not exactly same meaning compared to English), but I see no way to make the strings in e.g. the menu customization or keyboard shortcuts popups any shorter in German (maybe someone else has an idea though?). In general, it's a pretty minor issue anyway. But if somewhat easily achievable, flexible elements like the buttons in my first example also have the benefit of working immediately (i.e. no manual slimming down of translations) for other languages that are prone to using long words/phrases as well.
I will implement my suggestion regarding the mirroring for now and see how it feels 👍 Unless there is other input from German speakers?
@niklasbogensperger - I fixed the typos (see https://github.com/waydabber/BetterDisplay/issues/3554) and updated the localization file.
Regarding lenght for the Pro tab buttons, maybe simply something like "Pro kaufen" and "Lizenz bereits vorhanden?" would work (ChatGPT helped lol)?
About all those other buttons, feel free to shorten stuff. Some ideas in English (probably something similar is possible in German):
"Reset Warning Dismissals" -> "Reset Warnings" "Reset App Settings…" -> "App Reset…" "Restart App…" -> "Restart…" "Quit App…" -> "Quit…"
All these will show a pop-up anyway about what's happening so no worries. :)
I made some minor changes and added one new string (#62) - there is still one minor typo in the English strings (I commented on the issue in the other repo).
As for the string shortening: I think that is also a good approach, also for the English version. I will look into that sometime soon hopefully. The same goes for the mirror/sync issue.
Thank you @niklasbogensperger!
The translation now stands at 99%! I uploaded a new interim pre-release with the changes! Thanks again!
There is a new pre-release with the latest localizations. https://github.com/waydabber/BetterDisplay/releases
If everything goes well, I will soon release a proper stable version. Just wanted to let you know as you may want to have some of the missing strings localized so it will be 100% in the release. :)
