Localization: German #9

waydabber commented 10 months ago

Create a German localization for the app.

waydabber commented 10 months ago

@mickimnet, @philipbrembeck mentioned (https://github.com/waydabber/BetterDisplay/issues/1343#issuecomment-1701680691) that he is willing to work on the German localization. You guys can cooperate on it if you'd like, but since @mickimnet was first and I don't know how is the current progress, I'll let him decide on how to move forward. My recommendation is to divide up the work + review each other's work in the process. :)

waydabber commented 10 months ago

and again, I'd like to thank both of you guys for the help and the offer, I really appreciate it!

mickimnet commented 10 months ago

Hi @philipbrembeck, I'll be finished with the translation by the end of the weekend. Are you interested in reviewing, what I've done?

Hi there, sorry for the late reply. Yes, let’s do this 😊

mickimnet commented 9 months ago

@philipbrembeck are you in the Discord server? I could use some feedback about the translation of some words.

I could join today evening if that's also fine? 😊

mickimnet commented 9 months ago

Yes, of course. Communication is easier there.

philipbrembeck commented 9 months ago

@mickimnet I'm online 😊 (jakejakejakejakejake)

@waydabber the following is the current partial translation file. de-20230917.xcloc.zip

waydabber commented 9 months ago

Thanks! Here is an updated localization file with all the current strings included (this is still subject to change).

de.xcloc.zip

s0wx commented 9 months ago

Hi, I added some updates to the latest zip in this thread :)

de.xcloc20230927.zip

Just a question regarding how to align the "you/your/..." usage properly. Which way do you prefer in the app?

And is there some context-based difference when "display" is used instead of "Display" or vice versa?

waydabber commented 9 months ago

Hi @s0wx - thanks for the input! πŸ‘ I think an informal approach is better. Regarding display vs Display - I am not sure, can you give me an example? :)

but: @mickimnet is responsible for the German translation so I trust he will consult you on how to move forward (@mickimnet - I think you should consult @s0wx on how you guys can work together, maintain the consistency of the translation style, etc).

Note: for a more interactive way to collaborate, here is the localization forum on Discord: https://discord.com/channels/903276571773771796/1142501637961826404

Hello @s0wx,

Hi, I added some updates to the latest zip in this thread :) … And is there some context-based difference when "display" is used instead of "Display" or vice versa?

Thank you, for looking at the translation. I took a quick glance at your changes and would prefer your feedback, after I completed the translation. I try to use the official Apple Glossary for German for the translation and I'm currently building an own glossary for the translation. The glossary will also include the reasoning why Philip and I choose what translation.

Therefore I would prefer if you check the translation when we're done and have the glossary posted.

Take care Mick

Hey @waydabber and @mickimnet,

... Regarding display vs Display - I am not sure, can you give me an example? :) ...

Some examples in the localization file are

I was also a bit confused when the display is considered as monitor and when as display. Because in german both words also exist and some localization of display is replaced with monitor and a monitor is just an external display. Example in the file:

... Therefore I would prefer if you check the translation when we're done and have the glossary posted. ...

Sure, happy to help you. Just let me know then. I'm also in the Discord server and have set the same username as here. So you can also ping me there or write me a message, as soon as you have posted the glossary or need any feedback in between. :)

mickimnet commented 8 months ago

Hey @s0wx,

Currently I use "Display", when generally speaking about displays and "Monitor" if explicitly referring to the hardware.

I'll send you a friend request in Discord, so that I can create a group chat with Philip.

Take care Mick

I updated the localization file in the https://github.com/waydabber/BetterDisplay/discussions/2165 opening post to reflect the latest v2.1.0 pre-release version.

Let me know if you have any questions or issues with the translation. Also, if there is a partial translation and you want me to compile a version with it included so you can see the existing progress in the app itself, let me know! :)

waydabber commented 5 months ago

@dotWee - please add a comment here so I can add you to Assignees as well! Thank you!

waydabber commented 4 months ago

Hi @mickimnet @philipbrembeck @s0wx @FrankBeckerDE - thank you guys for volunteering to work on the German localization! Since there doesn't seem to be much progress/feedback on this, I need to ask - are you still working on this? If not, that is completely fine and I completely understand.

I am currently unsure on how to proceed with the German localization. It feels somewhat unprofessional to have a few strings here and there translated - I am thinking of maybe removing the localization from upcoming app versions until at least the menu and general options are translated (the long/complicated sentence-like explanation details are less of a priority). But if there will be some resurgence of activity, that would of course be even better.

I understand that translating the app is difficult + this is totally a volunteer work, so don't take this as any kind of pressure (I am just trying to keep things in order). Thank you! :)
