More descriptive Required Phone Number field #849

A customer reported that it is really not clear from our side that the phone number is mandatory for card payments and that it can be any phone number, not just a mobile number as expressed by the field name on the PP checkout screen.

They suggested changing the description to something that explains that better.

Hi there!

Because #772 already added sufficient explanation to the settings screen I'm assuming we're talking about the field on the checkout screen here, which is the one that says "Mobile". Sadly, we can't change that on our side, as the fields are rendered by PayPal scripts directly.

Feel free to re-open in case I've misrepresented the issue 😊.

Hi @jorgeatorres! Not sure if this falls under the purview of things that are out of our control, but I'm reopening this issue with some further details about the behavior. It really is quite confusing from a customer standpoint. Feel free to close it if it's out of scope for us.

I think the bigger issue here is that if a customer doesn't enter a phone number, no error will show on the page unless you specifically click the phone number field. The form will fail to submit, but there will be no indication as to why.

If a customer fails to fill out every field, all the fields except for the phone field will be outlined in red and have a red triangle with an exclamation point. By all appearances, it is saying that the phone field is not a required field, but it is.

I had a customer in chat today (4050818-zen) who sent me this screenshot that was sent to them after they had a UX audit on their site that helps demonstrate this issue:

If this issue is out of scope for us, who would we talk to at PayPal to get this fixed? Or is it too close to the sunsetting of this plugin for that to be a priority?

It was suggested I post here about the mobile number being required despite all options I can find indicating mobile shouldn't be required.

My client rightly feels that requiring a mobile number from customers will deter some of them from buying online. I can’t seem to find any way to make the mobile phone number field optional or to hide it altogether.

In PayPal Checkout settings, “Require Phone Number” is unchecked. My client says that the “Contact Telephone Number” setting in her PayPal account’s Selling online > Website preferences is set to off. Changing it to “On (optional)” has no effect either.
