It's so good. Last time there we hiked down to the ocean, climbed cliffs, drove fire roads into the mountains rally style in our rental car, hiked miles up into the mountains. My wife posted a few things on her tumblr about the trip. You might find some of it useful. We started in SF and drove to LA. We are moving back to LA this summer and I fully plan to head back to Treebones for some more exploration.

Sounds like you had a ball. Hiking isn't really my thing, but "drove fire roads into the mountains rally style in our rental car" is :)
