Hi team, can you take a look at the screenshot and let us know if that placement looks okay? Also, please let me know about the "crediting" folks, and if you'd like to add the words "Correction," "Tip," "Info/Tip," and "whoops" to the graphics! :) Thanks.

Hi @AnnHier . I think we decided we would not use the word "pause" when we have the generally recognizable pause icon. I also think we decided not to use any of those other words, instead making the message as quickly grasp-able as possible.

For no particular reason (except maybe the precedent of our speaker ID banners?) I envisioned these showing up in the lower left of the screen. Others, what do you think?

AnnHier commented 5 years ago

Thanks, @branscombj ! Let us know ASAP about placement, team. Thanks!

lzim commented 5 years ago

Thanks @branscombj and @AnnHier

  1. I agree with Jane, I thought we agreed to just use the photo, pause button and text (remove "PAUSE").
  2. I agree with Jane, I envisioned lower left too. While it might be nice to have it centered, my goal thinking was to have it out of the way of whatever it refers to on screen. And, akin to a "chat" like Skype.

It's looking good overall. please let me know if/when you have other questions 👍

Excellent, thanks for confirming @lzim and @branscombj! I am sure you did mention removing the word "pause," we will do that and just leave the button. No worries. We will also place it in the lower left! Thank you!

AnnHier commented 5 years ago

One last thing, @lzim, what did we decide about attribution in videos 5 and 9? Thanks!

lzim commented 5 years ago

@Annhier. Shoot!

I was hoping @branscombj or @dlkibbe might know right off, and I forgot to check. I can when I get home if we don’t hear from either of them.

branscombj commented 5 years ago

I was hoping @branscombj or @dlkibbe might know right off, and I forgot to check. I can when I get home if we don’t hear from either of them.

@dlkibbe co-facilitates session 5 and @TomRust co-facilitates session 9, so I believe they belong to any popups that are not ones where Lindsey is correcting herself. I only see one popup in all of those that's labeled a correction. That's in Session 5 MM where someone apparently misspoke and the correction is Excel, not Explorer (if that's worth putting in).

dlkibbe commented 5 years ago

Thanks for responding @branscombj - sorry I missed putting the names in 5 and 9 @AnnHier

lzim commented 5 years ago

I knew you two would know! Thanks for all your hard work on this @dlkibbe and @branscombj

@Annhier Sounds like Session 5 pop-ups are Debbie and session 9 are Tom.

AnnHier commented 5 years ago

Very good - we're on it! Thanks, @lzim, @branscombj. @dlkibbe and team!

lzim commented 5 years ago

NOTE THAT THIS GOES WITH MTL Video ISSUE - recommend we move our conversation to that issue. @staceypark @TomRust @dlounsbu @dlkibbe @AnnHier

from @branscombj

I don't know if anyone has other thoughts. From a viewer's perspective, I fear it may feel like, "So-and-so didn't say much on the video, so they came back with all these afterthoughts in pop-up messages."

I'm not sure whether it seems that way, are there some examples we can review, @AnnHier ?? I'm sure we need to make sure it is working well as intended ASAP as we do not want re-work :grimacing:

Hi @lzim, I can check - currently we're still mostly in the process of creating the popups before we edit them into the video, with the exceptions of the "placement" examples. I don't necessarily feel it will read that way if the "un-attributed" tips come from @branscombj or you, but that's just me! :) If you do want to see an example, I can coordinate with our editor and graphic designer to test in module 6 agg.

JUST Bringing this to the video issue #294

I agree with @AnnHier Even without seeing an example, I don't think it will seem the way @branscombj proposed. Given the way that Ann described the workflow, we could make a Lindsey pause pop-ups, and pepper it in to videos that may seem too much of the co-facilitator. I'm fine with doing that if it makes it more natural/balanced. I just know folks will see a fair bit of me 😄 so I think that's way we decided to do co-facilitator pop-ups in the first place.

branscombj commented 5 years ago

I just know folks will see a fair bit of me 😄 so I think that's way we decided to do co-facilitator pop-ups in the first place.

Yep, I agree; we just weren't envisioning so many popups then, or types other than pauses - assigned to non-LZ presenter - and corrections - which we ended up with few of because our 🏅presenters rarely misspoke!

Given the way that Ann described the workflow, we could make a Lindsey pause pop-ups, and pepper it in to videos that may seem too much of the co-facilitator.

I think that could be nice if it isn't too much burden for @AnnHier 's team.

AnnHier commented 5 years ago

That sounds good - so if I'm understanding correctly, we can attribute the Module 6 AGG popups to @lzim and maybe make a few popups in other videos Lindsey if they are all co-facilitator?

branscombj commented 5 years ago

That sounds good - so if I'm understanding correctly, we can attribute the Module 6 AGG popups to @lzim and maybe make a few popups in other videos Lindsey if they are all co-facilitator?

Hmm. @lzim were you saying"pepper LZpause popups into any videos that are heavy with other-cofacilitator pop-ups"? I If this is complex beyond its value, again, I'm fine to just have all popups show the cofacilitator who's on-screen with Lindsey, as we currently have it.

lzim commented 5 years ago

@AnnHier and @branscombj

I agree: If it's too complex beyond it's value, then the pop-ups can just be the co-facilitator on screen with me, as we originally planned.

I don't think we need to do Module 6 AGG with me, it would be mainly Jane still, since she's the co-facilitator.

At your discretion, Ann, if/when we have a lot of pop-ups, I could be some of the pauses, or something. I propose the pauses because it would (I believe) not require as much work to mock those up as the graphic has redundancy and could be re-used.

AnnHier commented 5 years ago

Thanks, @lzim and @branscombj, that's how we'll proceed!

lzim commented 5 years ago

@AnnHier

Question: Will you (or could you) have the closed captioning done sooner than the rest of the video edits? We could really use them now as we are refining our SAY guides.

Let us know, and thanks!

Hi @lzim, unfortunately in the editing process, the captioning is the very last thing to be done - videos need to be completely wrapped and in their final form for the captioning to take place. However, we're hoping to get the edits finished this week if possible and the final products sent to captioning next week.

lzim commented 5 years ago

@AnnHier GREAT!! Thanks for the update

lzim commented 5 years ago

@AnnHier Happy Friday 🌴

We're really pouring over our SAY files and are wondering when there might be a closed captioning transcript that would really help us to stay consistent between MTL Live and MTL Video

Thanks!

FYI: @TomRust @staceypark @branscombj @dlkibbe @dlounsbu

AnnHier commented 5 years ago

Hi @lzim, good news and mediocre news - the graphics artist has been out for a family emergency and we're hoping he returns next week, BUT I'm working with the editor to get the unfinished videos - the ones where there is no change in the running time or duration of the video clip - to the captioner. I know a few have some changes that would affect the running time and therefore, any captioning, so we can try to flip the order with most or all to get the captioning to you earlier, hopefully within a couple weeks, while we continue to work on graphics. Sorry for the change of plans!

AnnHier commented 5 years ago

UPDATE: @lzim - We have some - not all - files heading to the captioner next week. I believe 1, 2, 3, 4, 11, 12, and all for 5 - and we can begin batch sending them ASAP. Would you like to take another look at them in the meantime, or consider these changes final? Thanks!

Fantastic, @AnnHier ! Unless @lzim or @dlkibbe thinks otherwise, I don't believe another look is needed in terms of anything that would affect captioning; just when there are sessions with popups in, I'd love to check out how that's looking.

AnnHier commented 5 years ago

Hi all,

The files that are finished so far have been sent to the captioner, and in the meantime, we're uploading some of the finished files for you to review what they're going to look like. I'm working with the digital media person and should have those to you soon.

Thanks!

Hi @AnnHier, I've been tasked with watching the updated vids and had a question - the second Session 3 video seems to cut off abruptly at 1:19, is that correct? Unsure if it's a shortened version to showcase the edits made.

Oh dear! No, that's not right. I will have our editor replace the clip. @jessfroe, thanks!

AnnHier commented 5 years ago

@jessfroe , please check that link again, it should be repaired. Thanks! Again, @lzim, these are just intended to be a sample of how we've implemented the changes. If these are satisfactory, we'll export and create the rest of the videos as well as the caption files. Just let us know!

Hi @AnnHier , I hope you're well! I looked at these 3 of the ones you posted on June 6. I don't know if it's something about my computer (or old eyes), but the popups looked either a little or very blurry. In fact the video itself looked out of focus in places, which I don't remember noticing when we first reviewed them. For example, in Session 11, it looks sharp until 00:00:10, then at 00:00:25 when it first switches to the computer screen and popup, it's very blurry. Can others see if this is true for them too? @lzim @staceypark @dlkibbe Thanks!

AnnHier commented 5 years ago

@branscombj, thank you for bringing this to our attention! I spoke with the editor, as well as our engineer and our AV specialist - the streaming system we use has adaptive streaming; which means rather than stutter or stop, it will adjust to a slower connection speed (as the VA often has inside the firewall), allowing the video to continue playing, while somewhat compromising the sharpness of the image. What we have done to rectify this is to upload the videos to force them to HD streaming; this should help the blurriness of the video quality, but may affect buffering issues - please let me know if that's an issue for you. I wanted to go ahead and try this, however, since it's critical that the text be legible. Thanks and let me know what you think - the links will remain the same.

AnnHier commented 5 years ago

@branscombj - I should clarify that the three above videos you reference have been "locked" at HD - if that works, we can continue with the rest of the videos. Thanks, and have a great weekend.

jessfroe commented 5 years ago

Hi @AnnHier I am continuing work on the video links. A few initial thoughts:

  1. Lindsey is concerned about the fuzziness of the videos within the bcove player currently used. Is it possible to see an example video with this resolved? Is it potentially an issue only in the bcove player?

  2. Currently, the thumbnails for the videos are seemingly random screenshots. Lindsey would like the static image to be the MTL graphic across all videos.

  3. For at least the session 4 video, and potentially additional session videos, the outro sequence seems to be missing the chime, and the logo itself is incorrect. It should be the MTL and arrow animation, with "Test. Don't guess." underneath.

Lindsey mentioned that we do still have the 09:00a PST meeting slot open, in case it would be beneficial to touch bases in the near future.

@lzim @staceypark

jessfroe commented 5 years ago

@AnnHier Sorry, I should have clarified - when I say fuzziness, I am referring to the shared screen examples, when Lindsey is showing the learners what she is doing on the computer. These shared screen segments are quite fuzzy, and difficult to read and track. @lzim

AnnHier commented 5 years ago

Hi @jessfroe! Good questions.

Lindsey is concerned about the fuzziness of the videos within the bcove player currently used. Is it possible to see an example video with this resolved? Is it potentially an issue only in the bcove player?

-We did actually try a solution above in the thread with the 3 videos the @branscombj referenced. We "locked" these videos at HD resolution to force an individual watcher's player to play the video at HD resolution, rather than adaptive streaming to an end user's connection speed. I hope this helps make things clearer. If you think this improves it, we can have all the final videos "locked" at HD. I personally think we should since the screen content is critical.

Currently, the thumbnails for the videos are seemingly random screenshots. Lindsey would like the static image to be the MTL graphic across all videos.

-Absolutely. I will let the video uploader know.

For at least the session 4 video, and potentially additional session videos, the outro sequence seems to be missing the chime, and the logo itself is incorrect. It should be the MTL and arrow animation, with "Test. Don't guess." underneath.

-Good catch - I know we had the slate updated to the correct punctuation, but we didn't have it made it into an animation. I can do that.

jessfroe commented 5 years ago

@AnnHier Thank you for all of the valuable feedback!! Happy to hear those are able to be addressed. I have a general question that will eventually turn into a specific request... If there have been significant changes to the user experience since the videos have been made, and there seems to be enough text information that needs to be shared with the learners as they are watching the videos while using the updated system, is it possible to include a larger graphic or pop-up that could potentially interrupt the video/pause the video to ensure the learner is digesting the information? Let me know if I need to explain my question more clearly.

AnnHier commented 5 years ago

Let me know if I need to explain my question more clearly. Hi @jessfroe, no your question makes perfect sense and it's something we see more and more - an interactive video. Currently we do not have staff/software to do that fairly easily and quickly as we would be say, making a change to the video itself via an edit, however, I could see if there is any way we could use our captioning contractor to do something like this since I know they can "chapterize" videos I believe; we'd just need specifics - which videos and where in those videos, etc.

Again, don't take this to the bank just yet as this is kind of out of my wheelhouse, but I can definitely look into it and get back to you.

jessfroe commented 5 years ago

@AnnHier morning! I had a quick question for you - do you have the rest of the videos completed with the pop-up graphics added and the first pass of edits in addition to the initial batch you posted?

AnnHier commented 5 years ago

Hi @jessfroe, we wanted to put the "test. don't guess" animation with the chime on everything, so we wrapped that up today and it's been given to be uploaded. The rest of the files will need to be captioned as well. I will post the videos as soon as I can. Again, we typically don't caption until the videos are in their final FINAL form as any changes to the timing of the video will cause the caption file to not work with the video, and will have to be captioned again, which is via a contract we have and is pay-per-file (would like to not have to do it more than once)! :) I hope that makes sense.

jessfroe commented 5 years ago

@AnnHier that does make total sense. I guess my question then is will I have a chance to review the all the videos before the final final form? Just to spot check the graphics and make sure we didn't miss anything that needed to be added before captioning?

AnnHier commented 5 years ago

Yes - you bet.

AnnHier commented 5 years ago

Here is the first batch of links! All of the thumbnails have been changed to the title cards and the videos will only play at full HD resolution. Also, they should all have the chime and animation at the end. Thanks. Again, these are for final approval.
